Harvest sits in northwest Madison County, and much of the community was in the path of the April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak that tore through North Alabama. Homes rebuilt in the years after are now reaching the age where that first round of flooring wears out, so replacement work here is steady.

Alongside the newer rebuilds are plenty of older homes on crawlspaces, plus manufactured homes on acreage. Those older houses are where moisture matters most. A crawlspace that reads damp will cup solid hardwood within a summer, so we take a reading and look at the vapor barrier before we recommend wood.

For the newer rebuilds, the subfloor is usually sound and the choice is about durability and look — waterproof LVP for busy families, engineered hardwood for a warmer feel. For the older crawlspace homes, the honest answer is sometimes a subfloor repair first, then a floor that tolerates humidity. We would rather fix a soft spot than lay a beautiful floor over a problem.
